Chapter Eleven

It was after ten o’clock when Troy brought me home. He walked me to the front door, then drew me tight, his arms encircling my waist. A giddy flush of heat coursed through my body as he bent and pressed his lips to mine. Unbidden, my subconscious compared his hot, ardent kiss to Gage’s soft, tentative one. I thrust the thought away, determined to keep this night about Troy.

My heart pounded as I stood on the porch and watched has he backed down the steps and trotted to his car. No doubt about it, he was one sexy hunk of a man.

Inside, I found Connie dozing on the couch in front of the TV. She woke at the sound of the door latching behind me.

“How was your date?” she asked, levering herself upright.

“Fine,” I said.

“Just fine?” She rubbed her eyes and straightened her glasses.

“It was nice. What do you want me to say? We went to Edmonds and walked around the marina looking at boats. Then we went to a restaurant overlooking the water and I had the grilled salmon. We did a lot of talking. Like I said, it was nice.”

“Did he kiss you goodnight?”

I gave a little snort. “That’s none of your business.”

She laughed. “Will you go out with him again.”

I folded my arms and tightened my lips. “For heaven’s sake, Connie, why do you care? Why is everybody so eager to throw us together?”

She shrugged. “I like Troy, that’s all, and I think he’s perfect for you. He’s a lawyer. You have things in common. Plus, you’ve got to admit he’s awfully good-looking.”

I knew Troy was a favorite of my cousin’s. He’d been coming into her shop on his way to work every Monday morning for years to buy flowers for his office. He was witty and engaging, and she was thoroughly taken with him. By contrast, Connie had mostly seen Gage at his worst: moody, ill-tempered, and impatient with his neurotic, agoraphobic older sister. But that had ended when the mystery of his younger sister’s disappearance had been solved and her spirit set free. Now that Maureen was on the mend and the stress between them removed, Gage was proving to be charming and fun-loving, like the mischievous boy I remembered as a child. The boy I’d had a crush on.

“Sure,” I said, “I like Troy and I’d probably go out with him again. But for the millionth time, I am not looking for a new relationship, so stay out of it.”

She tilted her head and arched her eyebrows. “You took your ring off.”

I heaved a sigh and tossed back my hair. “You’re hopeless. Now, I’ve got to get my clothes changed. My friend Tamara will be here soon. She’s coming with me to the party tonight, and then she’s going to sleep here afterwards so she doesn’t have to drive home in the middle of the night.”

“Fine,” said Connie, rising from the couch. “Have a good time. Now I’m going to bed, and I plan to sleep late in the morning.
